So… The Viltrox AF 26mm f/2.8 EVO Lens. Nice.
I want one. But… I am good.
In isolation, I would have already ordered this lens. I have a huge soft spot for Viltrox lenses. I have several of their lenses already and have written about them. Fantastic lenses.
But I am good.
It is not the first time I have been able to duck a Viltrox lens release. I was also tempted by their new EVO 35mm and 55mm f/1.8 lenses.
But I was covered by the glass I already had. And the same applies here.
I am perfectly happy with the Samyang/Rokinon Remaster Slim kit.
Why? Welp…
I will start with the biggest selling point.
Pancake-iness.
Put simply, the Remaster Slim is even smaller.
Sure, the Remaster Slim does not have an aperture ring, but I am not bothered by this omission on such a small lens.
I suspect, based on my existing EVO lens, that the build may be a touch better. But once again, the Remaster Slim is just fine.
Price.
The price of the Viltrox is fantastic… but I believe the Remaster Slim kit is a better value.
Three focal lengths for a little more spend.
Three focal lengths.
Put simply, more versatile.
21mm f/3.5
28mm f/3.5
And my personal favorite…
32mm f/2.8.
Innovation.
Sure, a Sony full-frame pancake lens itself is impressive. But not three interchangeable lens modules impressive.
I will stop there.
There are areas where I expect the Viltrox may perform better. Image Quality and focus speed, for example. But for me, the items listed above cancel those out, and I am perfectly happy with the images that the Remaster Slim kit produces.
And truth be told if I am looking for image quality and focus speed, neither are the lenses I would be looking for.
So… to recap.
Well done Viltrox.
I want one.
But I am good.
