A wonderful combination that is capable of wonderful results made even better, as mentioned in an earlier post, with an aesthetically appropriate metal square hood and cap.

Have mentioned previously that this has filled the shoes once filled by the Leica Q. It took a while to find the right lens for me admittedly. As mentioned in an earlier post I am not alone in this assessment. Found an excellent video where a photographer makes the case for the A7C and FE 40mm f/2.5 G.

And he admits that he has yet to try the Leica Q2 he compares it to. Neither have I but I have owned a Leica Q and I do prefer the Sony combination.

Here are some pics from the last day or so with some additional thoughts on the lens afterwards.

The more I use this lens the more I realize how good it is. Here are some notes from the field just tooling about with it.

  • AF Speed and Accuracy
    • On paper this is not surprising since Sony put their latest and greatest AF tech in a relatively tiny lens. But as fast as I expected it to be, it is even faster. And extremely accurate. Plenty of Sony lenses have offered this before, but th next few bullets are why this lens is different for me.
  • Sharpness
    • I will just say it. This lens is ridiculously sharp. I am inclined to say, without a direct comparison, that it is one of the sharpest lenses I have ever used. Even stands up to the resolution beast A7RV. As a result cropping afterwards is never an issue.

  • Colors
    • This is one of the biggest surprises for me. While I love the technical proficiency of Sony lenses one could rarely accuse it of having colors of note. That changes here. To my eye this lens renders colors in a very warm way. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I like it very much. Reminds me of vintage lenses or certain brands like Rokinon/Samyang.

  • IQ
    • Was going to say I like the bokeh, the transitions from in focus to out of focus areas, how it renders and such… Well. I guess I just said it. But put simply add those items up and I am of the opinion that this is a lens that can produce wonderful results.

Put that all together with other qualities like build quality, on lens controls, aesthetics, compact size, great low light performance, and a fairly reasonable price and you have yourself one fine lens. So much so that it won me over even though I usually go for a slightly brighter aperture. It is a near perfect merging of all of my favorite lens attributes in a very small package.

Well done Sony.
