On my last trip to NYC for the World Photography Day event at Brooklyn Borough Hall…

…ye old native upstate bumpkin, about 10 year NYC resident in the middle, and current NC bumpkin got to meet in person and spend time with some amazing photographers. I follow some, like when I met The Phoblographer Editor himeself, Chris Gampat…

…and some who I have had the distinct pleasure of interacting with previously online, like Michael Young.

Not long after I found out that Michael is a RICOH GR ambassador.

I am not surprised in the least. His street photography is amazing.

Exhibit A:

Up to this point our interaction was made up of my liking and commenting on his amazing work and him leaving an encouraging word on mine from time to time. What a nice man. Well then I got to meet him in person and we got to talk for a while. Even sat next to him during our group photo in Brooklyn.

Afterward we continued to communicate and that is how I found out about him speaking at the NYC GR 30th Anniversary GR Ambassador Panel Discussion – Deep Dive Session.

Happened to be in town as my wife visited her family. I was available and my ever supportive wife encouraged me to go… So I went.

I have a bit of history with RICOH GR and GR adjacent cameras.

First I had the OG APS-C RICOH GR.

RICOH GR

And I loved it,…

…mostly. My “issue”?

This is personal preference so do not come at me. You do you. But for me?…

If I can only have one focal length it would not be a 28mm full frame equivalent.

To be clear, I love me some 28mm lenses… but as an option. I say again and say it with me.

28mm is a fine focal length. Just not my cup of tea if that is the only tea on offer. We good?

Moving on.

This led to an odd diversion. An interchangeable lens and sensor module (I want some of whatever the Ricoh engineers were on when they came up with this one. They must be a fun bunch, this engineer declarath.) having RICOH GXR.

A little bigger all put together…

…but offers.

  • Different focal lengths, including the near magical <deep inhale> Ricoh GXR – A12 50mm f/2.5 Macro.
    • So good that I even wrote about wishing RICOH would make it for other mounts.

  • Still offers a GR like 28mm module.

  • Different size sensors.
  • Zoom lenses.
  • IR modified modules aftermarket for <checks notes> $10 on eBay.

  • An optional EVF.

But lastly after snapping out of it I gave my GR to my son, sold off the GXR, and picked up a RICOH GRIIIx.

RICOH GR
  • 40mm focal was more to my my liking. About perfect for me as a one focal length option.
  • IBIS.
  • Improved AF.
  • All while maintaining all that prior GR goodness.

Was not even bothered by them omitting the flash. I rarely used the flash on my GR. And when I do I would prefer to use an aftermarket flash that gives some distance from the lens to counter any potential red eye and pinpoint light on cheek and nose issues. My choice was a Pentax compatible Godox TT350 for the rare occasion when a flash was called for. Again. Personal preference. I come in peace.

And that was the porridge that the B&E, thieving Dorothy stole from those peaceful bears while just trying to live their lives. <ahem>

Whoo! That was a jag, huh? Where was I?… Right!

Michael Young, GR Ambassadors, NYC, and such.

I brought some sensible image capturing gear, the same nonsensical set up used for the Brooklyn images above, and a film camera, but it only seems right to use a RICOH GR for a ROCOH GR event. (Psst. I used the nonsense and film cameras, but more on that in future posts.)

All Ambassadors tagged in the IG post above.

Here are the pics.

Thoughts.

I heart this camera.

I did not take many pics with the GR at this admittedly. The why is easy:

  • Mainly, I was there to listen not take pictures. And it was a great program. I enjoyed what they all had to share.
  • I split time with other contraptions as mentioned above.
  • This sort of thing is not what I typically use the GRIIIx for. That will come in posts that follow this.

Mainly used it for a bit of GR shooting a GR event Inception. And it did just fine.

Happy capturing.
