A Heck Of A Saturday; Part 1 of 3: The Morning Charlotte Juneteenth Hike & The Backup Precious/Bag Of Primes – Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art.
Camera.
A favorite. The do-it-all anchor of my Sony kit.
Even though I have been fanboying somewhat over some Fujifilm kit (My photography “passion” <wretch> gear.) recently, I have considered more than once switching from Sony FE to Fujifilm X for my main kit. Why? I am glad I imagined that you asked.
No good reason. That brand “loyalty” trap I mentioned recently.
And that is not a good reason at all.
What I have does everything I need it to do and more. I could point to other cameras and lenses, but this here A7C II makes a solid case for staying where I am all on its own.
- More than enough MP.
- Insanely competent AF.
- I shoot RAW.
- So any color science yammering goes out the windoe for me with this ast generation of Sony sensors.Great colors.
- Best lens selection of any camera system.
- I am a fan of the look and feel of the A7C line.
- Not something I ever expected to say about Sony.
- If anyone had told me that Sony would be the system to create a faux rangefinder form factor full frame (That is a lot of ‘f’s.) a few years ago, I would not have believed them. The Zf is nice, but I would rather the A7C over a replica mirrorbox hump. Canon has yet to bother. Personal preference. I come in peace.
The lens.
A bag of primes that replaced a few lenses quite handily.
Why did I call it absurd in the subtitle? Well… Because it is. Highs and lows.
- Highs
- Sharp.
- Bright.
- Great colors.
- Great AF.
- Relaces about three fast prime lenses.
- Specifically, 28mm (Close enough to replace a 24mm lens for me), 35mm, and 45mm (Close enough to 50mm for me).
- A bag of primes without having to change lenses.
- Lows
- Kind of weighs like a bag of primes.
Occasion.
A friend, fellow Photographer, and former fellow chorus member invited me to photograph a Juneteenth hike in Charlotte.

An hour and change drive both ways to walk 4 miles during the summer in NC? Yes. Photography was involved.
The pics.
Had the choice of 2 miles, 4 miles, or 6 miles. Had planned to do the 2 mile walk because I originally had to beack to my home area for a chorus singing event. Received word that the event was cancelled because A/C went out at the venue. With that I decided to do the 4 mile walk…
To recap.
It is hot as heck.
So much so that no A/C cancelled an event.
I then decided to walk 4 miles.
2 miles to the peak.
2 miles back down, gracefully falling down a trail.
A few years into AARP eligibility.
Outside.
Where the sun is…
Fortunately, I survived with no more than all the horses in my right leg. Charlie, Tom, Raheem, and the other horses, But at least my leg had the decency to wait until I reached flat land.
I took exactly one pic on the way down.
All energy was focused on gracefully falling down the trail.
Thoughts.
Add it along with the primary precious, the Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8,…
…, usied later this same day, and those would be the only lenses I would need if I were a sensible man… But I am not. Anyhoo…
Another successful scenes seen outing.
And left me time to get home for another photo session.
Happy capturing.
