On a recent photo walk a question was asked by Erskine Isaac about photography. An answer came to mind but I got distracted (shocker) before an opportunity arrived to respond. That answer:
Layers.
It is not anything new. Have seen the experts, the legends talk of such. But it has always been top of mind for me whenever taking environmental shots. It involves waiting for elements in different parts of the the frame to come together. Will often involve watching elements in the frame while waiting for elements to come in from the left or the right. An added bonus is when there is a connection between the elements.
The first example that comes to mind when I think of this is when I was capturing images at a church fair. The Pastor’s son was playing ball. Had taken a few shots and then I noticed the Pastor walking in to the frame from the right carrying a chair. So I framed up the shot and waited a moment:
Stellar? Perhaps not to many, but I love images like this.
In addition to waiting for things to line up I also enjoy coming upon a scene at the right moment. Something mid-frame. Something in the foreground and/or background. Two layers are good. Three layers even better. Perhaps different elements doing their own thing side by side. Below are some more samples.
I do not claim to be any manner of expert, but I know what I like. And these images give me joy.
