Scenes Seen: Running Errands w/ My Mom.

Hung out Saturday with my Mom. For the image capturing implement of the day I went with a favorite setup. But many other combinations would have sufficed. Now that I have settled on my current menagerie of gear I am realizing something. Started becoming clearer in my last post where I did not identify what was used. Certainly gear matters, especially depending on the task at hand. An all manual medium format film camera would be a horrible choice if any movement is involved for example. A high end massive camera and large glass would not be the best tool for candid or street photography for example. But most times my everyday photography has pretty low demands. I can go as slow as I would like. Most of my subjects are not in motion. Sometimes, like a recent family dinner gathering for instance,…

…my camera choice will have more to do with user-friendliness. Thought of bringing a rangefinder camera but then realized:

  • Since the background of the setting would not be ideal with many distractions subject isolation would be important which means swift and accurate focusing would be a huge plus.
  • A complaint my family has is that I am often not in the shots. Fine with me. But at some point someone would want to put me in front of the camera which would mean an on-the-fly rangefinder focusing crash course. (What you want to do is make sure you do not put your finger over that little window and line up the two… Nope.) I love my family too much to inflict this upon them.

So I went in a different direction that day. But this errand run with my Mom would work just fine with my rangefinder fascination. So I went with my silliest and most wide open lens. Had fun and largely because of the camera I met a local artist when he asked about it. As much as I enjoy the camera a rangefinder is still optional. Could have used this very accessible lens for the same purpose adapted to near any mirrorless camera. Anyhoo. Enough preamble. Here are the pics. The scenes seen.

We are on our twice annual trek to take my Mother’s pet coat for storage/retrieval. A vestige of my Northeastern origins as even Mom admits she would never have purchased one this far South. Here is a pic from a trip here a couple of years ago.

Nice folks. Every time we go they try to sell us both on their fancy fur wares. They finally got me to try a coat on this time after being asked so many times.

The nice fellow that brought the coat for me to try on this day.

When in Rome... Nice coat. Not my thing.

I asked if it came with a jewel-encrusted walking stick and received no answer but my Mother laughed. Not my bag. But if that second career as a celebrity portrait photographer ever works out, I might be back.

On to the food pick up. Still recovering from them no longer selling plantains but the beef patties, stew chicken (me), and oxtail (everyone else) were on point as usual.

Rounded out the day with some random captures on the way home.

That is about it for now. Thinking a little medium format film will be up next.
