Vintage Digital/Foveon Therapy: A Full On SIGMA Quattro Bender (Part 1 – sd)

The blog post title sums it up. Ok, a little more.

Have mentioned this before but I really like the SIGMA dp2 Quattro

Thought things would end there but this led me to acquire another, the SIGMA sd Quattro.

Even went so far as to cheer on rumors of a full-frame Foveon camera which will likely do my budget no favors. Well, after an infrared bender with the sd, I recently felt a need to get them out and stretch their legs. And they did not disappoint. Sure, they have their limitations.

  • Slow in general.
  • High ISO is not welcome here.

But for me, the images they can produce far outweigh those challenges.

  • Stunning IQ.
  • Great sharpness.
  • Creates great colors with good light.
  • Creates amazing monochrome DNG files full of tonal shifts and detail.

While they differ in implementation, specs (1/2000s shutter speed with the dp2 as opposed to 1/4000s with the sd for example.), and form factor they share a good deal of software and have the same sensor so they render images that I find to be indistinguishable from one another. Which is a good thing.

Ok. Enough of that here are the images. They were taken going about life. Most are in and around Durham, NC. SIGMA sd Quattro first.

Wrap up.

Quattro as a sensible choice? Still no. As I always say, there are many more practical options on the market. But I will continue hanging out with these oddballs just the same.
