Dadism – Like vs. respect…

A pivotal life lesson my father taught me during a rare contentious exchange when I was a teenager:

“You seem mad. So you don’t like me right now?”
Obviously I was not delusional enough to answer this question. At this point my father approached closely and calmly and flatly stated:
“People like a dog, but do they respect a dog? I am your father. I do not care if there are times that you do not like me, but you will respect me at all times. Are we clear?” -RLW
An immediate yes was the only answer.

From that day forward ‘like’ was a distant consideration in my mind far behind respect. -ELW
