GFX Scenes Seen: A Quick Trip To The Beach, A Bistro, & Great Company.
Subtitle: How Is That For A Wordy Title, Huh?
Let’s get to it.
A Quick Trip.
Read this somewhere.
“Those who say go big or go home do not take into consideration how much I really like being home.”
Welp… My wife dynamited me out of my house. Her sister is in town, and they planned a trip to the beach. They were kind enough to include me. So I went. Outer Banks. Never been. Kill Devil Hills, NC.
Sheesh. What a name. Anyhoo.
On my second day, my wife looked up a breakfast spot.
I recommend it highly. We sampled a few things. And all of it was good, but a special mention goes to their Shrimp & Grits.
The best Shrimp & Grits I have had, not made by my wife.
The manager was great also.
Like my wife, she is also an attorney, and she, my wife, and my sister-in-law hit it off.
So. Great company.
My better half on the right and my sister in law on the left.
On to the pics. Two cameras were employed for this post.
The GFX brothers.
Three lenses.
The beach.
A great highlight of this bistro was easy beach access. Just walk out the back door. So I did.
For the GF 80mm f/1.7, I already showed the pics taken with it above. The portraits of the three ladies above. Because portraits.
Next up is the CY lens that does quite well adapted to GF.
Here I had my fun, but after taking in the vignetting, I wondered what the well-behaved built-for-purpose GF 50mm f/3.5 would do. Perform perfectly is the answer, as is no surprise to anyone who has used a native GF lens.
Thoughts.
With new cameras becoming more and more feature-filled while also creeping up in price, I think one would be well served by really examining what you are looking for. Are you looking for the latest and greatest specs? Do you really need them? You may? But if not, I would recommend seriously considering older gear.
While early GFX cameras can hardly be called inexpensive, I believe they offer great value to a certain photography demographic. Those who prize IQ over speed and specs. I am that demographic.
Sony just announced a stellar new camera this week. The A7V.
Normally, I would write a “So…” post about such a release outlining my thoughts and usually concluding with me not getting that new bit of gear… And sometimes going back on my word later and picking it up down the road. The A7V is available for a reasonable sum; all things considered, and it offers fantastic features. Have heard it is a mid-tier price point for a top-grade camera specs proposition. And I do not argue with any of that… But I personally do not need that. What I would and did prefer was a larger image-capturing surface area. And as much as makes no sense a used, but relatively recent, medium format digital camera can now be had for less than a new full-frame camera.
And it makes for a wonderful temporary, intermittent distraction from doom scrolling in a world gone mad.
Well, that wraps things up for this post.
Happy capturing.
