Scenes Seen: FUJIFILM GFX100S + Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.2 & Ultron 28mm f/2.
Subtitle: A surprisingly good M mount lens solution.
The camera.
The lenses.
The setting.
The usual weekly chorus rehearsal run, with a stop through downtown Durham.
First the Nokton.
Switched to the Ultron.
And back to the Nokton.
Thoughts.
Why the subtitle:
A surprisingly good M mount lens solution.
Pretty straightforward. I had an M mount camera.
However, and I must admit that I’m surprised by this outcome myself, I prefer using the GFX100S with my M lenses. Why? I am glad I imagined that you asked.
There are a few reasons, actually.
Adapting.
Adapting glass is not exclusive to the GFX system.
That can be done with nearly any mirrorless camera.
IBIS.
Yes. I got along fine with the M 240 not having IBIS. But if given a choice I will always take IBIS.
Manual focus experience.
But the GFX has a couple more tricks up its sleeve. A great two screen manual focus aid that can be used through the EVF and puts me in the mind of a rangefinder experience. However, the real trick is that you can use it with the back-tilt screen.
Tilt the screen up or sideways and low and high angles are on the table as well.
Two focal lengths.
Medium format mode.
Used, as I do, with the full sensor and a 40mm lens that works out to a 31.6mm full frame equivalent, and a 28mm lens works out to 22.12mm.
Full frame mode.
That brings a touch of vignette, which I happen to like. Easy to eliminate by using the camera in full-frame crop mode. Not only retains the original focal length.
Resolution.
Full sensor brings 100MP. But here is the kicker. Unlike the 24MP M 240, I traded towards this camera, in full frame crop mode the GFX packs 60MP… You know… Like an M11.
Flexible.
Along with being a great platform for using M mount lenses, you also have access to modern phase detect AF.
Combine all of that with the fact that a GFX100S barely costs any more than a many years old M 240 and a fraction of an M11, and I am well pleased with the outcome.
This is not a solution for all.
If, as I thought I did, you MUST have an M, then only an M will do.
That is what I had thought, but I am happier with the GFX.
Welp. Enough of that.
Happy capturing.
