Scenes Seen: A 2012 DSLR Design SIGMA DG HSM 35mm f/1.4 ART.

What is in a name?

Well, quite a bit if it is the name of a SIGMA lens, evidently.

  • DG = Full Frame.
  • HSM = Hyper Sonic Motor.
    • Aka the motor used in DSLR era SIGMA lenses, including ones like the 35mm variant I have.
    • I was today years old when I learned that the DN used in the name of their build for mirrorless lenses stands for “Digital Neo”. This refers to the use of more modern step motors that are silent. The HSM lenses above seem as fast but emit a fair bit of clicking in AF-C mode. Noticeable in video mode, less so for stills. Not all lenses have both a HSM and DN mirrorless versions.
  • ART = SIGMA declaring we are fancy now.

I have two of these old beauties.

On to today’s lens.

As said in the first…

…and second post on this lens.

As stated in those posts, the lens is great. The pics. The weekly chorus run where the f/1.4 aperture was handy now that the sun is dropping earlier. There will be repeats.

I snuck in a couple wide angle pics with the Viltrox AF 14mm f/4 Air during rehearsal.

And back to the SIGMA on the way home.

Thoughts.

In short, I really like this old lens design. No need to upgrade for my purposes.

Happy capturing.
