Scenes Seen: Rokinon/Samyang Remaster Slim Kit.

Preface: This blog reaps unforeseen benefits from time to time.

This time, it took the form of a renowned photographer that I have great respect for reaching out to me on social media. To paraphrase, he asked if I had any thoughts on a new camera release. I did. While recovering from the shock of him reaching out to me, and before I had an opportunity to respond, he stated that he had found the post.

What?

To recap. I am a camera nerd of hobbled attention span who employs all things photography as therapy. Events like this will never cease to be surprising to me.

After a bit of back and forth, we landed on a RICOH GR and FUJIFILM X100 discussion. As you do.

I shared that of the two I landed on the RICOH GR…

…mainly driven by the question of size.

He and I both share a preference for full frame if possible. That is when I shared that instead of an X100, even though I had owned one,…

…I landed on the similarly sized full frame combination of an A7C and the Samyang/Rokinon Remaster Slim kit.

I shared these screenshots…

…and then he stated the biggest surprise. He had read that part…

What?

That someone who I have so much respect for actually reads my ramblings? That is cool. And he is cool to interact with? Even better.

Life is good.

This got me to thinking. I am really chatting the Remaster Slim kit up here.

And partially on my advice two other friends and photographers bought this kit… But I have not used it in a while.

So today, I decided to fix that.

In the past I used one particular module per post. This day I brought all of them along. Mostly running erands with my better half. A perfect time to use this kit. Here are the images.

Thoughts.

So, do I still recommend the Remaster Slim kit?

Yep.

But, I also came to a rather surprising conclusion.

As an overall camera solution, I would have to pick the A7C II/Rematser Slim kit.

  • All other things being equal, I will choose full frame.
  • Superior AF.
  • Interchangeable lenses.
  • EVF.

But, as a compact carry solution? The GR all day. And I can say this without hesitation because I just used the GR yesterday.

  • The Remaster Slim is small, but the GR is so small that I carried it in my back pocket while walking.
  • Quieter in operation.
  • Macro mode.
  • APS-C or not it goes toe to toe with the larger sensor A7C II.

It also helped me make more sense out of my letting go of the X100S.

Sensor size difference set aside all of the other daily carry advantages apply.

I have prattled on about this kit long enough. I can still say this, though.

Well done Rokinon/Samyang.

Happy capturing.
