PhD Graduate Session: What A Great Experience.
Had a recommendation from a kind co-worker. Her friend’s daughter was getting her PhD and she recommended me when she asked if she knew of a photographer…
How nice.
There was some urgency so we talked and made plans to meet on Sunday. Rain was in the forecast but we decided to take a swing at it. Nice folks.
Brought off camera lights, but in the rain? No. On camera flash it is. A perfect time to try out a new modifier. A Neewer dealie for less than $30 with the discount code on their website. A dome dealie with three modes.

I used the focused light mode. Intended it as a replacement for the stick on magnet bounce card flash that sends the bulk of the light into the stratosphere outside… and also falls off of the flash if you look at it funny. Might try this new modifier in 180 degree soft glow mode next time. Speaking of flash… Used the new fangled Neewer Z2 I just wrote a post about.
Teamed with the portrait kit I have been obsessing over as of late. All I brought actually. Exacty how confident I was that it would be all I needed. And the little shoulder bag beats the heck out of the roller bag of many things I brought on my last graduate session.
More specifically, this pairing.
Following a stellar performance at a recent wedding,…
…I expected excellence and it did not disappoint.
Did I ever stop it down?
You know I hear it has an aperture ring with which one could stop it down, but that never happened. Not what I bought this pairing for. Will I ever stop it down… yes… if I have to. But that time was not on this day.
The young lady is a bona fide genius (Check the book titles below.) and she and her parents were a pleasure to work with. They brought props, like balloons and the books, along with ideas. They also played along with my suggestions. The venue was their suggestion. The North Carolina Museum of Art. A great space and I definitely will be using it in the future. Welp. Enough yapping. Here are some of my favorite images.
Follow up thoughts.
Flash modifier and flash.
The new elements. Worked perfectly. A great mobile lighting solution.
Camera and lens.
A pleasure to use.
The folks.
The best element of the day. Nothing like capturing images for wonderful folks. I wish this young lady all of the success she can get a hold of as well as her parents.
That is all for now.
Happy capturing.
