So… The Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM…

Of Course I Want One. But…
Before I continue, let me say this. First I am only stating the obvious. I am sure many will draw the same conclusion. I also want to say that this write up applies to my use cases. Others will be able to easily justify this new Sony zoom. Do not get me wrong. I have watched a video or two. Have heard it is utterly amazing optically. I am impressed with such a magnificent technical accomplishment. That sorted…
I already have this.
It. Is. Magnificent.
So much so that I once had two lenses that I called ‘the precious’. The other one?
Yeah. I do not own that one anymore. This Tamron is that good. I prize it above one of Sony’s best lenses. What the Sony 50mm f/1.2 offered in bright aperture and stellar image quality was easily outdone by the impressive flexibility and image quality of this 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Tamron.Similarly if you compare it to the new Sony 50-150mm on B&H’s website…

…the difference comes down to this.
Sony 50-150mm f/2 Pros over the Tamron.
- F/2 through the entire zoom range, where the Tamron gives up on f/2 pretty quickly and is f/2.8 through much of the zoom range.
- Class leading IQ.
- Focus breathing correction.
..I think that is it.
Tamron 35-150mm Pros over the Sony.
- Lighter and smaller.
- (Much) Less expensive.
- More flexible 35mm at the wide end.
Similarities.
- Neither has OIS.
- Expected on the Tamron but surprising at the Sony’s price point, size, and weight.
Again. Excellent lens. Glad they made it. It will be a great fit for many. There are no downsides. A stellar accomplishment. But I believe I am good. Before I close out, here are some of my favorite photos with the Tamron.
Happy capturing.
