One Pic: Worth A Wasted Roll.

Comedy of errors.

Bought a filter for another camera. Realized it fit another couple of cameras I really like. Both Konicas.

Cool. Why? Easy.

  • The viewfinder and the taking lenses are not the same so you can compose/focus with the filter on.
  • On both the meter sensor is behind the filter so the camera will adjust the camera exposure itself.
  • While relatively inexpensive both are stellar performers.

So why a comedy of errors? Easy.

For starters when I went to test the exposure on the AF2 I pressed the shutter and wound on I felt resistance which meant only one thing. It has film in it. With now 6 exposures spent. I had no idea and I have not used it in a while so I had no idea whether it had color or B&W film loaded.

And I already have two rolls of film to run through so this made a third. So fine I said. I will start with it before the other two. Drove to my destination framed a pic and… nothing. The batteries were dead. Whee! I put it away and went back to plan A, finishing the other two rolls of film.

Then on the way home I decided to grab a bite to eat at a local little restaurant. I then decided to stop for batteries since the AF2 takes easily accessible AAs. But then an event occurred at the restaurant that took the wind out of my sails. As I later documented on the book of face.

Done with the foolishness. Was eating at a restaurant. The “news” (not faux news but they are all trash at this point) was on and some chucklehead came on spouting bigoted nonsense unchecked. Calmly said “Nope. Not doing this.” out loud. Got a box, paid, and bailed. Not upset. The only response I have is distance real or virtual. I have long retired from engaging foolishness. Forward.

This is exactly why I say analog therapy. I am not kidding. Just like a roll of film or two is what snatched me out of the doldrums on my dearly departed Father’s birthday earlier this week. I struggled on with a half hearted effort to finish the roll after leaving the restaurant. I took absolutely no care in framing or composition or allowing the camera to focus. I just wanted to finish the roll. If nothing came out no big deal. I develop my own film and would be developing this with a roll I already finished so no time or money lost. And plus I have those other rolls so I am good. If anything does come out of this roll that will be gravy. And as expected most all of the pics were trash. But… there was gravy. A pic of something I have been capturing for months. I have photographed it repeatedly but could not find the right angle to suit the absurdity of the situation. But this day I found my favorite composition of the scene yet.

A simple hip shot taken a few moments after the scene described above. And I really like it. That sign. The decrepit pool. Guest as singular. I like it.

I did not bother even scanning the bulk of the roll. Dismissed them at the scanner preview. The first 6 exposures mentioned were nonexistent. Misfires mostly. I am not sure what my issue was that day but I imagine it may have played a part in forgetting this roll of film. A few were… alright. More repeats of the nearby scene.

Ok… That last one I also like. But not as much as the one above.

And I am not bothered by any of this. I had three rolls of film to develop and every pic came out on the other two rolls. So the day was a success.

So yet another successful analog therapy session at the end of the day.

Happy capturing.
