RNF: Reminiscing About My First Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera.

A FB memory came up recently of a photo…

Washington DC

…taken with my first ever interchangeable lens digital camera. An Olympus E-PL5, the subject of my first ever digital interchangeable lens camera post, and kit 14-42mm zoom. Otherwise known as the day I walked up to the opening of the digital camera and lens rabbit hole.

It was for a trip as a chaperone for my daughter to DC where we were walked like mules for two days. So much so on day two I fell unconscious on the bus ride to Arlington Cemetary, was reportedly snoring like a broken buzz saw, and had to be shaken to rouse me when we arrived. But my daughter and I bonded, I got those I was put in charge of back in one piece, and I loved the images I captured.

Accidental fire while checking to see if the lens was extended and one of my favorite photos from the day.

I was hooked.

This same lens performed well for other tasks as well, like the male chorus and I singing the anthem before a Durham Bulls game in the before times.

Also did well when I got bored with the game and wandered off to take some photos.

As these things go with interchangeable lens cameras my first thought was what other lenses could I use instead. Here are some pics from another trip I chaperoned for my son to a local science museum after acquiring another lens with further reach, the dirt cheap and far better than it has any business being Olympus 40-150mm.

One of the photos that won a contest, the only one I have entered, at my employer, UNC, and hung in the offices for years.

Same lens did well at a fireworks show also.

Next up the 14-42mm did what was asked of it but I wanted a more compact lens.

Olympus E-PL5

Welcome Lumix 14mm. These are two of the best-performing, while also being some of the least expensive lenses, you can buy. In all honesty, I could have stopped here. The pic above was taken while visiting family in NYC. That camera and both lenses were so small and light that I did not need a camera bag and all fit in my cargo pants pockets. They were fantastic. Here are my favorite images from that trip.

An all time favorite of mine. Was walking with my family through Central Park, saw the couple, brought the E-PL5 and 40-150mm up to my hip and there it is.

In all honesty, those were good times. Simpler times. Choosing a camera and lens was easy because I only had one digital camera and one film camera. Would I change anything? No. I like where I am now also. But I can appreciate the different approaches.

No need for me to go back. I did so once as a distraction back in the dark days and I do not need to go back again. I now have different gear for a different time in my photography journey.

Just shows what can be accomplished with even the humblest of gear.

Happy capturing.
