I wrote in the original 40mm f/2.5 G post that I have been very happy with the Sony A7c.
This camera has been excellent in every way and has succeeded at every task I threw its way. This has since confirmed with a post detailing why I see no need to upgrade to what are technically better successors to this camera.
Given the success of this pairing I will spare you the walk down lens churn lane that led me here.
If you would like more details, I direct you to my linked post at the start of this post.
In another post, I recently compared the 40mm to other Sony 50mm-ish lenses.

In that post, I said:
I hope you were not expecting a suggestion… I got nothing. All of these lenses are great. In many cases, a reasonable person could use any one of them for every purpose above. This post was of a “what I like about each” variety.
I meant every word of that statement. But of all of those lenses, the 40mm would be my last choice for a portrait. Not because of any IQ concerns. It is stellar in my opinion. It is the widest and slowest lens of the bunch. With that said it did prove it could handle portrait duties as well… just as I had stated. Was going to an onsite meeting. The 40mm was the choice of the day because I planned to take some candid pics during a holiday get together. Here the same specs that make for a better portrait choice are disadvanges in a tight space. The 40mm focuses closer. The 40mm’s wider field of view works better in tight spaces. A deeper depth of field would be preferred so a faster aperture was not needed. But something told me to bring my flash… just in case. Had no plans to take a portrait but better safe than sorry.
Then it happened. A friend and co-worker and I were looking to schedule a portrait session. He came over and asked if we could do it this day…
Sure.
I proceeded without hesitation. Here are the results.
Result?
I am well pleased. Could ask no better. A relatively humble aperture provided plenty of background blur and subject isolation. It could easily be your only prime. This is great news considering:
- This is the smallest lens of the four compared by a good margin.
- It is the second most affordable lens… by a good margin.
- It is as well built as the two more expensive options in my opinion.
- Has on lens controls only rivaled by the far more expensive G Master option.
Well done Sony.
Happy capturing.
