Full disclosure: I have not watched or read a single Sony A9 III review.
I just checked the specs. I get it. A global shutter is an impressive advance.
But, its benefits…
- Full power flash sync at every shutter speed.
- No shutter… no rolling shutter.
- Insane top shutter speeds.
- Insane fps.
…are not necessary for my purposes.
But I get it.
New models are necessary. Competition is fierce. One must feed the gaping maw of the hype monster. And many will benefit from these advances.
Me?
- I rarely, if ever since my band Dad days ended, shoot at fast speeds.
- For my “real” work I have what I need already. More than enough possibly.
- If I am honest a years old Sony A7 III could do just fine. The same goes for my little A7C.
- I spend as much, if not more, time tooling around with film and sub 13MP vintage digital cameras.
That is all a long winded way of saying I am not the target customer.
For me, it would be like using a sledgehammer to drive in a thumbtack.
This is a change. In the past, this would not have stopped me from obsessing over the latest and greatest simply because it is the latest and greatest. But similar to my previous digital medium format obsession I have come to realize that I was after the buzz of saying that I had a thing rather than reaping any actual benefits from that thing.
Kind of a buzz kill, if I am honest.
Part of me misses the new gear announcement dopamine hit. But I am good.
Would love to test one out. Very happy that Sony continues to innovate. A relief having been abandoned by a camera company in the past. But I can mark myself safe from Sony A9 III GAS.
Happy capturing.
