Another Event, Another Sony FE 50mm f/1.2 GM Post. The Primary Precious.

Had a community event to capture. Did not fully know what to expect. But I did know what main lens to bring. The practical precious.

Lens Test - Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8 Di III VXD
Tamron 35-150mm f/2-2.8

Why do I call it the practical precious? Because in all honesty it is the only lens I need for my photography work. It is the best zoom lens I have ever used. Nikon users are in for a treat. Maybe Canon will come around and let other companies make RF lenses. Reaching a 225mm equivalent in crop APS-C mode and 35mm at the wide end it covers just about any situation. I team it with the Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 for the rare occasion that I get backed into a tight space and I am good. But it never saw the light of day. 35mm was plenty wide for my purposes.

Now for the fun lens. The primary precious.

Used it also to great effect. The best prime lens I have ever used. I have had a few ask what I think about the since released FE 50mm f/1.4. A fine lens that I might have considered if they had been released in reverse order. But with both available I think the f/1.2 is worth the added expense if you can swing it. If not the f/1.4 would do just fine. Heck, the old timey FE Zeiss 55mm f/1.8

Father's Day

…(Used. For the new price I would get the 50mm f/1.4.) would be fine. Good times.

This day the GM had environmental portrait duties for the outreach venue partners. I could certainly have used, and did use, the 35-150mm for this as well.

But the 50mm f/1.2 is where it is at for me. And it performed flawlessly. It just did not miss.

Camera

Any A7II and up body would do. This day the A7C was used.

Settings

Since these pics would be done with subject awareness rather than candid I went with aperture priority. For one or two subjects on the same plane I went with f/1.2. For larger groups I went up to f/2.8 or f/4. Using a camera dial would work as well, but I find it quite handy that the GM has an aperture ring.

Location

Was not sure if this would be held inside or out. With a bit of rain setting in I was hoping for an inside venue and it was.

Lighting

It was hosted in a gymnasium that was surprisingly well lit. I brought lights, but they were not needed.

Wrap Up

As usual, the GM did not disappoint. Made a great day filled with great people even better.
