First off let me say that I am happy that the Sony A7CR and A7CII exist.
I am glad they are extending the “C” range rather than leaving it for dead. I like the Sony “C” concept and was concerned that they would not follow it up. I need not worry about this any longer.
But this is a story something like what happened with the A7III. The A7IV was released but I was pleased with the A7III. It was so good that I did not feel a need to upgrade. That is what has happened here so far. The new cameras are better for sure, but I have what I need with the A7C. I’ll go model by model.
A7CR
I have more MP with the A7RV already. If I did not have that maybe I would be interested. So that one was easy.
A7CII
And similar to when the A7IV was compared to the A7III, the A7CII does not have anything that would pull me away from the A7C. This is a pic I took with the A7C recently.
Taken with no muss or fuss. It locked onto focus instantly and it looks great. I can think of nothing upgrading would do above this.
I am glad they made them, but I am perfectly happy as is.
Plus, I must also admit something. In the past using Sony has been a practical decision. Things like lens selection and AF adapters lead the way. No emotion was involved. Pure logic. Logic is what drove my attachment to the A7III. But the A7C is a bit different. It is the first Sony I have actually become attached to for emotional reasons. Makes a great daily carry camera when I do not feel like shooting film, focusing a digital rangefinder, or dealing with SIGMA’s narrow functional envelope. Even purchased an outfit (KAZA case with Haoge thumb grip.) for it and everything.
As a result, the A7C has eclipsed the Flickr keeper count of every other digital camera I have ever owned. This includes my last favorite, the A7III, and I have not owned the A7C for nearly as long. By a massive margin.
What would I recommend to others?
First and foremost whatever floats your boat.
If pressed?
If you have an A7C and do not need the new features stand down. Carry on as is. You can always upgrade later.
If you do not have one and do not need the newer features, wait a bit for more first gen A7C bodies to hit the used market after other folks upgrade.
If the A7CR or A7CII have features you need have at it.
All the best to you regardless.
May very well reconsider in the future. But to sum up for me:
- I am glad Sony made them.
- But right now the A7C is safe.
I close with some of my recent favorite Sony A7C photos.
Happy capturing.
